Subject: Re: Golden rule for box dimensions

Designers used either the golden ratio that the Greaks created or the acoustic ratio. The golden ratio is 0.618 : 1 : 1.618 and the acoustic ratio is 0.7937 : 1 : 1.2599. Designers can also make their own ratios to get the best or sound results. If you are building a 2-way or a 3-way loudspeaker you should use a rectangler box because it doesn't induce or decreases ringing from resonance of the box. A cube box is fine for subwoofer if your filter is crossed low enough. It is usually is.

For the ratios mention above you take the volume convert it into either inches, centimeters, millimeters, or meters. Let's take for instance inches. You want the box be a Vb of 3 cu. ft.. Take the 3 cu. ft. and multiply it by 1728. The 1728 is from calculating box volume 12 inches X 12 inches X 12 inches. Next take to the power of one-third or 1/3. This will cube root the value. Next plug it in either ratios above and you got your box dimensions.

3 X 1728 = 5184
5184 ^ (1/3) = 17.30699 inches
17.30699 X 0.618 = 10.6957
17.30699 X 1 = 17.30699
17.30699 X 1.618 = 28.00271

Sorry about ^. This character is the yx or taking to the power of... on TI calculators or other calculators but it is used in programming languages. It is also used in writing equations for EXCEL.
