Bullock's free boxmodel can help you decide at what frequency to start cutting to get the result you want. Now that I think of it, Brian's ported.xls might work for this too, showing you the reduced excursion at low frequencies after the filter is applied.

The fact that sealing the box reduced the problem pretty much proves that it was below-tuning info that was bottoming your sub, since excursion above tuning is the same for both vented and sealed.

You don't need a lot of equipment to measure T/S parameters. Check out www.kbapps.com and you will see a method for measuring them yourself. The method suggests using a frequency counter and signal generator, but your computer and soundcard can replace both of these components if you download tone generating software like I mentioned earlier. So you just need to buy/make a couple connecting cords with alligator clips or something and two resistors.
