Subject: Sub Questions re Quad ESL_63s

I have a nice pair of Quad ESL_63s and I am toying with building or
buying a subwoofer to supplement the bass. Commercially made subs
are so expensive, even used ones, that I might build my own.
I have looked at this site a little and have concluded that a sealed
acoustic suspension or dipole sub might be best for this application.
The Linkwitz dipole subs look very interesting.
However I am a complete novice and I don't understand how to
manage the amplification of the sub and crossovers. I read in a
Stereophile issue about a Bryston 10B Sub crossover device that, I
gather allows one to establish volume and crossover points and slopes
for a sub. Is this what is meant by an "active crossover"?

I guess that's enough questions for now. I would appreciate hearing
from anyone who has built a sub for Quads, and how their experiences
went.

I am pretty handy as a woodworker, so I think I can manage the
enclosures, it's the rest of the project that has me stumped.

Go to music and design and check out the active "U" frame
I built it for a friend and it integrates perfectly with the quad.
