Subject: Is it worthwhile replacing the Shiva 12 inch Subwoofer driver?

The Shiva was a fine driver, but can I make a significant improvement
by replacing it with one of the two below?

Dayton DVC310-88 12" DVC Series Subwoofer
The DVC310 is almost perfect replica of the Shiva but has a much larger magnet.

Or the Dayton RSS315HF-4 12" Reference HF Subwoofer 4 Ohms.
Aluminum cone, much larger magnet.

They both will work well in my well braced 60 liter sealed enclosure and Hypex HS200 amp
with 4th order L&R C/O.

The DVC310-88 is basically a drop-in replacement for the Shiva. There will be little improvement, if any. The magnet size is inconsequential anyway - more important are the driver's T/S parameters. Trying to judge a driver's performance on magnet size is a bit like trying to judge a car's performance on engine weight - it's HOW that magnet is utilized that's important :-).

The RSS315HF-4 might be a bit cleaner sounding at higher levels, but difficult to say from the specs alone. I doubt that there would be SIGNFICANT improvement - the Shiva was a great driver. I suspect that to get a SIGNIFICANT improvement, you might have to move to using a larger subwoofer, or using two.

Regards,
Brian
