I'm a little bit confused about how to hook up an active crossover, do you just hook it up in between the amplifier and the speaker ?

An active or an " electronic " crossover as it's sometimes called, is connected between a pre-amp and a power amplifier. This configuration is called bi-amplifying.

Let's say you have a 2 way active crossover. You will have a high pass and a low pass section. Sometimes there will be an adjustable crossover point and also an adjustable crossover slope rate ie: 12 dB per octave or 18 dB per octave rooloff.

The idea is that everything from the pre-amp goes into the active crossover, the crossover splits up the sound into seperate high frequencys and low frequencies and they in turn go to 2 seperate amplifiers.

Hope this helps :)
