DST (Peerless, Scanspeak, Vifa) has acquired them with a notice on their site. These look quite interesting.

Its a tubular design of varying diameters. At each end of the tube are motor structures coupled to alternating diaphragms in a push-pull topology so as to cancel the mechanical intertia with the result being drivers that vent out along the tube in opposite directions and impart no inertia to the enclosure.

Look promising. I can see doing a similar arrangement with a couple of woofers. But these are truly unique.

Anyone heard or seen these things?

DST was bought by Tymphany.

"The combined company will be named Tymphany Corporation with headquarters in Cupertino,
Calif. Hackworth will head the company, along with co-founder Kantor directing technical strategy
and innovation."

"Vifa International A/S, the home audio
products provider, will remain an independent company."

Tymphany ripped the idea from Dr. Oscar Heil, these have been around for more than 25 years!

Dr. Heil's design is a Mid-Tweet folded ribbon, not a woofer. These Tymphany devices are completely different in that they are NOT transformers whereas the Hiel devices are. From what I see of the two devices, the only similarity is perhaps the shape with the Tymphany devices being MUCH larger.

The Tymphany devices use conventional technology in that there is a pair of opposing voice coils that are connected to multiple diaphragms, much like two woofer cones pointed at each other, only repeated many times. No ribbons involved, no Impedance transformation as in the Heil.

The ESS Transar woofer is on the bottom. The AMT 'ribbon' device is above there. The woofer consists of a series of rigid diaphrams connected with carbon fiber rods, there is a woofer magnet and coil at either end.

No difference, I was an ESS dealer during that time frame :)

Looking for info (service manual/schematic) of the transar amplifier. Maybe there is one gathering dust in a n ex-ESS service center somewhere.
Does anyone know of such a place ?

Thanks,
Dimitri

I had never heard of Heil's woofer design. With todays technology, I'd like to see what Tymphany can do with the concept. it really is compact and inherently free from imparting intertia to the enclosure. Looks like it could be quite promising.

Actually the previous poster is a bit more accurate. The Heil Transar system from the 70's used a woofer system with a VERY similar design to the new Tymphany woofers. Most people are only familiar with Dr. Heils more common AMT tweeters, but he also pioneered the very unique ( at least until Tymphany came along) woofer system used in the EES Transar system.

Most people are not familiar with this 70's all out assualt on the SOTA because there were very few made.
