Sorry to be sarky but give a dimensionless question and get an almost dimensionless answer. Give us some useful information to go with. 3 things required VAS,QTS and FS. If you cannot get these go with manafacturers specs. Have a wander round this site to get a grounding in what it's all about. Good Luck Hyper-Cube

Hi, I have two 10" subs, only 100 watt, nothin fancy. I have a regular cab truck and not very much space behind the seats. I have made a separate box for each sub, and the dimensions make it just under .5 cubic feet in volume. Is this too small, what will happen if I use this? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey. I have here dimetions for a SEALED box which will fit your Rockford 12's. Here are the numbers:
28" W • 14" 1/16 H • 18" 1/8 D1 • 11" 3/8 D2
I hope you comprehend all this. If you are a little shady still, I got these numbers from a magazine which you can order online at: www.crutchfield.com you have to dig a little to find the online registration and it will take about 2.5 weeks to be delievered, but the magazine is worth having! Post your Thiele/Small parameters, these are Qts,Vas + Fs and a box size & tuning will be rendered available, additionally as I believe you have already made the box, I will be able to see what performance you have got if you use it. Is it 1 box and 2 drivers or 2 boxes 2 drivers. Generically, 1 * 10" would probably be o.k in a 0.5ft³ box, especially if it was sealed. Anyhoo, post and let's see Regards Hyper-Cube

Box volume (dimensions) are large determined by the woofer's "Qts" parameter. Usually the manufacturer provides this data for you. The Qts determines whether the box is sealed or ported to best take advantage of the woofer's performance capabilities. For example, if a woofer designed for a ported box is placed in a sealed box, its low frequency performance will not be as good as it would be in its properly designed enclosure.

Since they are JL's, I take it is for car use? If it were for a house I would definitely say build three boxes and just stack them together. This is not as easy to do with a car box. Maybe if you are very creative and have very good building skills. Most likely, just make sure once its built it will fit into (and out of) the opening for trunk hatchback or whatever(if it is going to be a close fit, try a cardboard mockup to be certain, don't laugh it works great! I did this for a box to go behind the seat of my regular cab truck, and found out it didn't fit; saved some time frustration and wood). A few friends around helps. In any case with 15" JL's you will need good bracing of the box, 2x2 is very cheap and works quite well, brace from top to bottom and the sides. Definitley account for the volume of the bracing when calculating box volume, you'll be sticking quite a bit of wood into it.

Here's what you need to do:
- First, decide on what SHAPE box you want to use. Square? Rectangular? Circular? The rectangular box is probably the easiest to make, so let's use rectangular for this example.
- Now, you're using 12" drivers, right? That means that at least one dimension of your box has to be more than 12". Let's set this to 14", which leaves an inch of clearance on each side of the driver.
- Each driver has a minimum mounting depth. The specs for my driver suggest that there must be at least 3" of clearance behind the driver. Let's assume your driver is 5" deep. This sets another minimum dimension of 5"+3" = 8".
- The driver itself will occupy some space in the enclosure. Let's say this is about 0.1 cu.ft. This means that the box has to be 1.5+1.1 = 1.6 cu.ft. in size.
- Working with the minimum dimensions given above, we can calculate the last dimension as follows: L = 1.6*12^3/(14*8)=24.7". Required INTERNAL dimensions for the box are therefore 14"x8"x24.7"
- If the last calculated dimension is too large (remember, these boxes have to fit in your car - add 1.5" to each dimension, then work out if they'll fit!), try increasing one of the other dimensions. For example, L1 =1.6*12^3/(15x8)=23", and required INTERNAL dimensions are therefore 15"x8"x23".

3/4" MDF (medium density fiberboard) should be used and it should be coated with a layer of poly-urethane. This is because the MDF is poreous and air seeps through. As far as the volume goes, sealed enclosures require less internal air volume than say a vented enclosure would. In most cases the sealed is 25% smaller.

Use 3/4" MDF wood or a Sonotube (concrete column form) with 3/4" MDF endcaps. 3/4 inch plywood is an alternative. Don't use particle board or cheap plywood with voids (holes) inside and with unfinished surfaces. Size should be in the one to two cubic feet per driver range, assuming the 10" drivers are typical car drivers. I'm guessing, of course -- give us some driver specs and you'll get more than a wild guess.

To answer your first question, I'd recommend an MDF panel of at least 3/4" thick. As far as your second question is concern, you'll need to find out the T/S parameter and crunch in the numbers into Mr. Brian's sealed box program until you find the kind of curve that suits you most.

The answer depends on the T/S parameters for your speakers, as these parameters will dictate the box size required to get the best results.
Usually the T/S parameters are provided in the documention you got with the speakers, or perhaps you can get them directly from the manufacturer.
If you want to try the "wet finger in the air" approach, a 0.75 cu.ft. box for each driver, tuned to taste with fiberglass stuffing in each box, may produce good results.

First convert cu. ft. to cu. in.. For example
cu. ft. X 1728 = cu. in 1728 is the number by taking 12 to the third power. In english terms it is V = H * D * L (1728 = 12 * 12 * 12).
Then take that number to the cube root or cu. in.(1/3). This will give the multplier for a 6 sided box. Then plug in either the golden ratio (0.618:1:1.618) or acoustical ratio (0.7937:1:1.2599). You can make a cube like box or a custom ratio because box modes will be higher than the used frequency spectrum.
It is mostly geometry skills. Then add 1.5 to each final measurement if you are using 3/4 MDF board because two 3/4 in thick board is 1.5 in.

You have a lot of options. You can make many different sealed boxes. You can either have a dual sub style, which mounts to two subs in a box that is 4.46 cubic feet, with no seperator. This will be a fairly big boc becasue your subs require so much volume space. or you can make a push pull sub box, front to back isobaric box, back to back isobaric, or piggyback isobaric. All those are harder to build, I would recommend the first one I mentioned.

65 liters each? That turns out to be 2.3 ft^3 each.
How would you know if the box volume is 2.3 ft^3: Decide on two of the dimensions of the speaker box, take (2.3*1728) and divide it by the product of the lengths you chose. That will give you the third length.
And of course, don't forget to account for driver and port displacement.

Often the box is built to some ratio. For example 4:5:6 is a short squatty box that does not use a lot of wood for a given volume. basically box volume V=4y5y6y solve for y by taking cube root of V then multipy y by 4 to get the length of the side and so on. Again this is inside dimension. Off hand I can not think of any others, but you don't what to produce to much of a tower type box, possibly could produce a pipe effect.
